Fleshy nose (meaty nose) Rhinoplasty !
Two patients have not the same exact facial features, anatomic features or surgical goals. Rhinoplasty must be “fit” on the face. This is the only true guiding principle in Rhinoplasty. The nose must fit the rest of the face.
Anatomic features are crucial to diagnose and plan for before surgery so that there are no intra-operative surprises.
There are some signs to recognize what the shape of your nose is. the obvious features of meaty or fleshy nose include:
- Thick skin on the tip of the nose
- The visible pores of nasal skin
- Wide nostrils
- Big and bulbous tip
- The wide lower part of the nose
- the thin and weak skeletal cartilage of the nose
if you can find the mentioned attributes you have a meaty nose.
Is rhinoplasty different for patients with fleshy nose (meaty nose)?
Meaty or fleshy nose rhinoplasties require a special skill set. Surgeons say that the challenge lies in reshaping and resizing the nose while retaining its distinct features and keeping it proportional to the face.
Typically, patients with fleshy nasal or meaty noses have flat bridges and wide tips. The number-one goal is to create a new tip [through cartilage grafting]. Patients also often request a reduction in nostril size.
it’s also important that patients have realistic expectations. It’s not a good idea to take a wide, thick nose and reshape it into one that’s thin and tiny.
Thick nasal skin that makes it challenging to refine the nasal tip also needs to be thinned out.
Features of the fleshy nose (meaty nose) include the following:
- Low nasal bridge
- Washed out nasal bridge
- Short nasal bones
- Wide nasal bones
- Oily textured skin
- Medium to thick skin envelope
- Broad nasal tip cartilages
- Weak tip cartilages
- Flared nostrils
- Potential for hyper- or hypo-pigmented scars
- Potential for Keloid scars
However, there are significant variations from patient to patient.
Will fleshy nose go back to its former state?
The answer is that if the desired results are achieved within 6 months of operating fleshy noses, then there won’t be any major changes anymore and it shall remain in that shape or state.
Because of the thick skin it takes a long time for the mass and bulk of the nose to reduce so the patient has to wait for at least a year to get the final results which are usually permanent and irreversible after 6 months.
What should I do after rhinoplasty surgery?
Computer imaging allows detailed communication between the Rhinoplasty seeking patient and the Rhinoplasty Surgeon.
If a patient with all of the fleshy nose features and anatomic findings desires to have a nose identical to a person with bony nose, (which is nearly impossible and unrealistic), then it is much more fruitful for the Plastic Surgeon to dissuade the patient from doing Rhinoplasty. This is much more ethical than carrying out an aggressive destabilizing Rhinoplasty and compromising the structure of the nose.
It is also much more sensible to talk such a misinformed patient out of Rhinoplasty than to perform a Rhinoplasty and then tell the patient after the surgery “this is the smallest or narrowest your nose can get.” Discussion, dialogue, education and informed consent must be provide by the Plastic Surgeon, prior to surgery. After the surgery, explanations are regard as excuses and often result in disappointed or disillusioned patients.
This is not to say that significant improvements or beautiful noses are not achievable in patients with fleshy or meaty nose. On the contrary, very beautiful changes can be made to nearly any patient with fleshy or meaty nose seeking Rhinoplasty; however, only when the Rhinoplasty is performed properly with safe structural technique by dedicated and highly trained Rhinoplasty Surgeons. This is an advance operation that should not be performed by the novice or inexperienced Plastic Surgeon. The best time to get the best Rhinoplasty result is during the very first operation.
